In their very Radiohead-esque release, Arctic Monkeys have released a teaser track, not a taster track. The two things are very closely related, even the same some might argue. But what 'Brick By Brick' does is not give a clear indication of where the next album is going to go, it leaves you just as curious as before. But what is sure is that the Arctic Monkeys are still progressing forward on their way to becoming one of Britain's top rock bands.
'Brick By Brick' is a fine guitar track, straight from their Queens of the Stone Age-influenced era but poppier than what we were treated to on the more mysterious 'Humbug'. Fast-paced, guitar driven with a distinct lack of any verses, it is rock 'n' roll put together, erm, brick by brick: it builds and swells thrice into guitar solos and a typically Turner vocal. It's brilliant and it shows how the Arctics have evolved.
The Arctic Monkeys were at the forefront of the indie rock explosion of the mid-2000's, but they have shaken this off to become of the best rock bands to come from this country in decades. They've taken a lot of influence from Josh Homme, added that to their energy and Turner's lyrical prowess and become one of the established ones on the music scene.
Along with the surprise nature of the release of 'Brick By Brick', there was the similarly quick announcement of fourth album 'Suck It And See', due for a June release. As one of the country's biggest and best it has hardly seen a huge leap in anticipation; it was already pencilled in as one of the most-wanted releases of the year from early conception. And 'Brick By Brick', in its quickfire brilliance and teasing availability, is the perfect appetizer for what lies ahead.
And here is the Arctic Monkey's new song, 'Brick By Brick'.
