Panic At The Disco - The Ballad of Mona Lisa - 21.03.2011

Here's this week's single, 'The Ballad of Mona Lisa' from Panic At The Disco, and what I thought of it:

Panic At The Disco were brilliant. Their 2005 release 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out' was one of the most recognisible and original albums to come out during the 'emo' movement of the mid-2000's, earning Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith a loyal following of fans. This time was effectively their peak - surrounded by bands like Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance and Taking Back Sunday, they had company and that music was vastly popular. But it is now 2011.

Fallout Boy are now on an indefinite haitus, My Chemical Romance have moved from emo to power rock and noises from Taking Back Sunday's new album are that it is in a more heavy vein. Emo is officially dead, but Panic At The Disco (some people's epitome of the movement) are back themselves. Three years have passed since the release of 'Pretty. Odd.', and let's just say they haven't changed dramatically.

'The Ballad of Mona Lisa' is Panic at their best. Brilliantly weird, it is an alternative rock anthem with a light piano build-up reminscent of 'I Write Sins Not Tragedies' and a swelling release in the pop-rock style of Fallout Boy. It's triumphant and confident, Urie's exempler vocals taking off from where we last left them as if he's never been away, and the track is fantastically performed. Coupled with the usual odd video, Panic At The Disco are in vintage form for this ballad.

Maybe emo isn't fully dead then? 'The Ballad of Mona Lisa' is not a dramatic departure from their previous style in any sense, but it should do well in 2011 with its sheer hooking catchiness. Bands like Paramore are still prospering in this post-emo climate, so why can't Panic At The Disco? It should see up-coming album 'Vices and Virtues' do well, and I hope it does for this fantastically infectious track.

Great song and here is 'The Ballad of Mona Lisa'.
